The Sony Ericsson Open formely Nasdaq 100 Open tickets
The hottest tennis in Miami now has a cool new name. The Sony Ericsson Open (formerly known as the Nasdaq-100 Open). The name has changed, but the great tennis you expect to see at Crandon Park won't.
The first Sony Ericsson Open (formerly known as the Nasdaq-100 Open) will take place on the Island of Key Biscayne in Miami, Florida and is set to be played March 26 - April 6, 2008. The top 96 men and women in the world are lining up to dethrone 2007 champions Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams.
In 2007, Serena Williams rallied against the No. 2 seed Justine Henin and captured her fourth career Sony Ericsson Open women's singles title 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 in front of 13,397 fans.
On the men's side, the 19-year-old Serbian Novak Djokovic became the youngest ATP player in Sony Ericsson Open history to win the men's title as he defeated qualifier Guillermo Canas in three sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in front of 14,593 fans.
In 2006, Roger Federer joined Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi as the only male back-to-back winners in Miami's 22-year history, defeating Ivan Ljubicic in three close sets, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6), in the final.
On the women's side, Svetlana Kuznetsova won her second big American event, adding the 2006 title to her 2004 Sony Ericsson crown with a straight set victory over Maria Sharapova, 6-4, 6-3.
History
The Sony Ericsson Open, currently the largest tournament in the world with Title Sponsorship, is celebrating 23 years of world-class tennis.
When Butch Buchholz established the event in 1985, it marked the first time in 56 years that a new two-week tournament featuring men and women was launched.
Located in Delray Beach (Laver's International Tennis Center) in 1985 and Boca Raton (Boca West) in 1986, the tournament found a permanent home in 1987 on Miami's Key Biscayne.
In 1994, Miami-Dade County christened the Tennis Center at Crandon Park, a 30-acre expanse that is transformed each year from a public tennis facility into a full-fledged festival for the Sony Ericsson Open.
The event features the world's top-ranked pros - 96 men and 96 women in singles competition, and 32 men's teams and 32 women's teams in doubles action. The men's final is best 3-out-of-5 sets with every other match in both men's and women's singles and doubles will be best 2-out-of-3.
The Sony Ericsson Open was awarded "Tournament of the Year" by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for four consecutive years and seven of the last eight years and in 2004 by the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. The Sony Ericsson Open is considered one of the most prestigious titles in professional tennis.
The Sony Ericsson Open is the only combined 12-day Tennis Masters Series event on the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour calendar.
